Dido Moving From Her Really Good Bird Street Block

SELLER: Dido
LOCATION: Oriole Way, Los Angeles, CA
PRICE: $4,600,000
SIZE: 3,739 square feet, 3 bedrooms, 3.5 bathrooms
DESCRIPTION: Star-studded Bird Street beauty w/ breathtaking views facing Downtown, & the Westside/ocean. Walled & gated, lge motor court, expansive grounds. Ample upside for a buyer interested in making this an even more major property. Dramatic LR in Hollywood Regency style w/ fireplace & views to pool/grounds. Media room w/ gorgeous views, lge DR w/ French doors. Kitchen beautifully remodeled. Enormous master suite w/ fireplace, sitting areas, adj. gym, huge closets, & marble bathroom. 2 add'l bedroom suites.

YOUR MAMAS NOTES: We confess. Your Mama really does not know much about British born singer/songwriter Dido other than that a few years ago she had a huge hit called Thank You that made her mountains of money. A quick search across the internets and we find a few tidbits such as she was raised without television, plays at least three instruments (the recorder, piano and violin), credits white rapper Eminem for launching her into the world of singing super stardom, and back in 2004 she made it on to somebody's list of the music world's biggest earners. We also discover that her real name is Florian Cloud De Bounevialle Armstrong, a lovely combination of syllables, but it's no wonder the ladee goes by the much easier to remember and pronounce Dido.

We don't know whose list it was that claimed she was a big earner in 2004, but it must be accurate because it was shortly thereafter than the money train pulled into Miss Dido's station and she dumped an undisclosed amount of money on a big Bird Street aerie. Property records indicate that Miss Dido bought the somewhat non-descript 3,739 square foot house in September of 2005.

Listing information reveals that in addition to the three bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms, the single story sprawler features a library/study, media room, a remodeled kitchen, a "dramatic" living room, and a huge master bedroom with big closets, big marble bathroom, fireplace and an adjacent home gym set up. Perhaps the best feature of this house is that it possesses long views in two directions...both towards the downtown skyline and also across Bev Hills towards the Pacific Ocean.

The big name listing agent for the property dropped a telling bomb in the listing description when he said, "Ample upside for a buyer interested in making this an even more major property." Now babies, this does not mean there is anything wrong with Miss Dido's day-core per se, but rather that the house itself is wonky enough to merit a redo to take if from well located ho-hum to bring it home to Jeezis fabulous.

In the main, Your Mama feels just fine about Miss Dido's house. No, it does not look like a nice gay decorator spent too much time in there (as evidenced by the sofa mashed uncomfortably into the corner of the master bedroom), but the media room looks rather dee-luxe with it's sensual wood walls paired with a pair of deelishus white sofas (y'all know how much Your Mama loves a white sofa) and the view from the tub is classic Hollywood Hills iffin you like to sit in your own dirt.

Normally we don't much care for grand pianos taking up too much precious square footage in living rooms, but given that Miss Dido actually plays this big black thing, it's more than acceptable. In fact, it's fantastic. We don't however care for the fireplace awkwardly pushed off center of the back wall. This off center thing seem an unintended and not recommended motif. Hmm.

There appear to be several areas for outdoor entertainment. The swimming pool is good for all those health conscious sporty sorts who actually enjoy swimming laps, and we can imagine comfortably whittling away warm afternoons with a pitcher of gin and tonics and a pile of gossip glossies on the terrace overlooking the flats of West Hollywood and beyond. And who does not like a fiercely competitive game of ping-pong? Who?

As the listing reveals, the immediate neighborhood is "star-studded" and area residents including comic book king Stan Lee next door and set designer/kooky entrepreneur Boyd Willat lives across the street. King of the Hollywood Hills Leo Dicaprio holes up with his various moe-dell paramours in his newly built fortress down the street, and Tobey Maguire and family are temporarily camping out close by in Leo's other house presumably while they plan and build a family manse on the Brentwood lot they recently purchased. And last, but certainly not least, Ricardo Montalbán's own private Fantasy Island is just around the corner.

So who knows what's what here? Is Dido headed back to the UK? Is she buying an even bigger and better house in LA? Or is she cashing in on a well located and high priced piece of real estate like so many other rich and famous folks in Hollywood?

Is that a white landline old school table phone complete with cord from receiver to base on the table next to the couch?

If so, kudos, cause it looks v. groovy against the deeply hued wood grain walls.

a tub in the middle of room with a big ol window with an expansive seems like nirvana to me. rain or shine. cause you know, it never rains in california, but man it pours.

Dido sort of cashed in multiple times on Thank You -- first on the Sliding Doors soundtrack, then as a sample on Eminem's track, and then as a single on her record No Angel, which sold 12 million copies. And since she's a songwriter, she also gets royalties from the publishing -- where the real money is. Oddball piece of trivia: She co-wrote Britney Spears' I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman...had to have scored some bucks out of that, too.

I'm salivating at all that off-street parking, even if it is an awkwardly shaped driveway -- I wonder if that disc is actually a turntable so you don't have to back all the way out. Boring architecture, but nothing egregious, all very workable.

Ah, and glad to see in the last thread that Alessandra's taking her catchphrase out for a spin.

Anonymous said...

She's not a 'one hit wonder' ... Her 1st record went platinum in 35 countries after selling 15M copies, her 2nd album was one of the fastest selling albums of all time debuting at number 1 in most countries & many of her tracks have been used for t.v & film ... In 2001 she earned $20M so I think that was enough cash to buy this little place ... The house is o.k, not really my style but I'm shocked it's so cheap - the land alone must be worth in excess of $4M ... There's a teardown just along the street on Tanager thats on at $6M+ ... This place will sell fairly quickly, perfect for a developer to build something amazing on nice quiet street surrounded by some of the nicest hollywood hills abodes - perfect.

The location is superb. Don't know if it is the way the pictures are taken, but the rooms seem a bit small. Then again, if you don't have kids or frequent house guests, the second and third bedrooms can be closets, so long as the master suite is glorious.

Am salivating over the tub and its spectacular view in the master bath and speaking as someone who puts on SPF 5000 in the harsh, unrelenting LA sunshine, I appreciate the shaded (thought most likely heated) lap pool.

All in all, not a bad piece of real estate.

I have long coveted Ricardo Montalban's Oriole Way home...when are you going to sell Ricardo, when ?!? Die old man, die!!! (Just kidding, I love Ricardo...he is getting up there though)....call me, I'll save ya the 6% commission! (LOL) Hey Mama, any word if Ricardo reads your little blog?

Anyway, back to the property at hand...one of the nicer bird street properties, I just prefer mine more modern architecturally...

And I'm in the "Dido is NOT a one-hit wonder camp...", she had another song, something about going down with a ship, that I think is one of the saddest and most heartbreaking songs ever written, I was sitting home stoned one day and caught the video (with David Boreanaz as her lost lover) and found myself tearing up from the emotion her beatiful voice generated (I'm a strong believer in Brian Wilson's theory that some music is inherently sad-enough sounding that no matter what the words are, they stike an inner chord of emotion).

Enough rambling for one day, sorry!

Where's the big INFINITY POOL overlooking LA???????????????? for $4.6M and that neighborhood, I want a big INFINITY POOL!!!!!!!! that pool in the pic looks awful - like a friggin sewer ditch!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

She didn't make much money, considering she paid $4.15-million for it back in '05...BTW, Ricardo's house that I covet is actually 1423 Oriole DRIVE, not on Oriole Way, one of the 3 major estates in the center "island"....

Anonymous said...

With the exception of the MB, I think the whole house feels like a cave. No thank you.

The view, however, is spectacular.

Anonymous said...

The pool is awful - does it get a kiss of sunshine at all? I don't think this home is worth the price tag. How many coats of primer will it take to cover those ghastly red walls?

"I don't think this home is worth the price tag"

It doesn't need to be, the land alone is worth the price tag!

Yeah BigDaddy, 1423 Oriole is pretty nice, the place at the end of Oriole Way is really nice also ... Has 1401 Oriole sold yet or is it STILL on the market?

He's Baaaack!

I for one love this house, for all the quirkiness Mama already pointed out, like the off-kilter fireplace in the living room, and the couch crammed in the corner of the master (although that valance has got to go).

This is a house that looks lived in and lived in well; love the sheen of the wood walls in the den, the view is great, and from what I understand from some of you folks Oriole Way is one of the premier Bird Streets in the area.

From the welcoming courtyard to the "sewer ditch" pool, this looks like it has been one happy home that holds a lifetime of good memories - I hope she's moving on up to something even nicer.

Where's Aunt Mary?

Anonymous said...

After that last bit of Sturm und Drang, Aunt Mary mentioned she was taking a break from leaving comments -- but said she'd be reading them. So we can give her a shout out every now and then.

Anonymous said...

So_Chic, haven't heard from Caveman either lately; could the rumors be true?

Perhaps they're shacked up in a crumbling villa in Tuscany, sipping Veuve Clicquot and giggling at the latest shenanigans on this board?

Anonymous said...

PCH, I remember her saying so, but I miss her; her comment to Bentley "I have purses older than you . . ." made me snarf my drink.

Aunt Mary, please come back; don't let the haters win - we miss you terribly.

Love, love, love the bathroom and bathtub, esp. Looks like the room w/the piano would be hard to place furniture in, but I'd rather have the piano sort of facing the outside. I wonder what the kitchen looks like? I like the rest of the house too.

clearly he's smart, got stuff to say, but is totally uninterested in notching it down in order to be, well, liked, so there you have it.

now, are we sure it's a pool? it looks like a koi pond or something.

We seem to be developing an unfortunate pattern here:

1) Someone complains about the volume/content of other comments.

2) Those of us who are regulars respond with a quick defense of our "friends."

3) Others who are frustrated want to validate the initial complaint.

4) Hell in a hand basket.

We look cliquish and heavy-handed, which I don't believe any of us mean to be. Those who seem to have no contributions beyond complaints, meanwhile, come off as entitled and petty, which I don't think they are. The perils of online communication in full evidence.

I'd like to propose Détente. We regulars should work on keeping the conversation germane. Others, likewise, should consider adding to the conversation, or redirecting its trajectory, before registering a complaint.

I like hanging out here, and would really enjoy seeing more new voices and perspectives. Now it sounds like I'm gonna start a goddamn chorus of Kumbaya, which is as good a time as any to STFU.

I need to cleanse my soul and confess. Last Saturday night’s quick dash for a box of wine is foggy. One thing lead to another. I awoke to a que stick breaking over someone's head and LAPD bullhorns. Q-Boy, my new boyfriend, said our archrival, Junque in'a Trunk Stagers, LLC absconded with my leatherette clipboard of new project assignments. The ransom note owes up to the Oriole disaster, along with further grizzly threats if don't give up my CEO Pink Bentley at twelve-bells--at a desolate Long Beach pier. LAPD Tipster will again intervene, disguised as moi. What a sport.

Honey, you're our only hope to make right on reworking the Oriole disaster; our stellar reputation of six months hangs in the balance. If all goes well, you're on call Sunday with OT, big bonus and promotion. The truck's loaded with a house full of Hans Wegner pieces, yes and the Papa chairs, daybeds, teak casegoods, everything. Details to follow. LAPD Tipster's code name for the "GO" will be "Lil'gay boy finished the book."

Anonymous said...

For the square footage, this place seems way smaller. I was a guest there once when it was owned by the previous family. The den is the best place about it. Dido opened up the living room A LOT by not covering up the windows (the prior owners had tons of heavy drapery and it did seem more cozy). For the most part, the layout is the biggest issue. This place is crammed up against the hill and really shows more like a big bungalow when you drive up. For almost 5 million dollars, I'd much rather have a place with real city views as the only city view I recall was from the den and is mainly from the one corner window through bushes hence the pixilated shot. I do like the view from the bathroom, though. The motor court isn't that wide, you can't make uturns unless it's empty. Cute but cramped, which is due to the layout!

No offense to the "family" but i'm not looking for "family" here. mine is crazy enough.

I'm not even looking for friends, thank you very much, I just want to read the posts and then read some smart, snappy, and brief comments about them without having to wade through a bunch on nonsense.

Love Dido in all her mournful (and lucrative!!) ballads.

Also love "old hag in a house" and "look at that dreadful chair" as blogger names. Laugh every time.

PCH, you are a voice of reason.

Can someone please tell me about the bird streets, I'm a New Yorker.

Ahh shit, I'm out of Scotch...

Hey Bentley I've got half a bottle left.

the bird streets consist of nice quaint, not overdone homes, with great views, but i defer to pch, lgb, hipppie & others to provide the details.
my first topical post!?!?

Anonymous said...

I would leave NYC in a second for this place.

Anonymous said...

The Bird streets are the equivalent of some of the best buildings in Manhattan...i.e. where you know you're going to way overpay on a square-footage basis, but you do it anyway because the building is in such a great location, has such a great view, and is full of celebs and power players...

BTW, I don't know if I'm considered a "Regular" or "Family Member" or not, but I just try to post my little thoughts and move on, and ignore any hater comments made about me...sometimes they're long, sometimes they're short, and sometimes they go against the "flow" of opinion on a property, but I've always found when posting on a blog you gotta just say your peace and move on without being overly sensitive like a little bitch! That's my two cents on that whole controversy...

Hey Bentley. The Bird Streets are just above the Sunset Strip, and similar in concept to the larger Trousdale Estates development, which lies just to the west. Both were developed by grading the hills into large building pads of generally equal size. Happened over in Laurel Canyon's generally unloved Mount Olympus, too. (Previously, roads and architecture in the Hollywood Hills had mostly deferred to topography.) Steep streets, spectacular views. I was at a party on Blue Jay Way recently and it really does feel like you're on top of the world. Lots of swankily re-imagined mid-century houses, and still a fair number of mediocre-to-start-with hold-outs, all only a few minutes from the Strip. Very fashionable at the moment, and with good cause.

My dear family;

As I explained to Sunny in a private tete a tete a while ago, there are haters who troll successful blogs for the number of hits and then move in (some of us in IT call them "raiders").

Their sole purpose is to identify popular blog sites and take them down by attacking popular posters and singling them out for attack (as they lack the skills to formulate a virus and completely take down a site - kinda like viral-attacker wannabees).

No blogger wants to sweat all night only to see "Comments 0" after all their so hard and clever work. But these raiders lack the technical skill to outright blow a blog out of the water.

Mama's chilrun: ignore them, and continue to blog as you so entertainingly do. To put it tastelessly, they're all ADHD and will quickly lose interest, move on, and leave us alone.

Anonymous said...

My Dear LGB,

The so-called "haters" are not "raiders" looking to take down a successful site. That a nonsensical attempt couched in a little IT expertise to deflect the negative focus away from you.

The "haters" don't take issue with the "family." Nobody "hated" on PCH or BigDaddyJ or Caveman or So Chic or any of the other regular posters. They've taken issue with you and your excessive know it all touchy feely prattle.

Anonymous said...

Things have really heated up in here, haven't they? All those that can't stand the fire better get out while they still got skin on their bones, right?

As someone who has read this blog regularly since the first day it launched and has known Mama personally for nearly 15 years, I can tell you with 100% certainty that Mama is not someone who would be interested in joining anybody's online "family" or being a part of anyone's group hug.

And if there's one thing that Mama hates more than anything, it's a self righteous know it all bore. And there seems to be at least 2 or 3 of those in here.

I really am trying to be helpful and not controversial, so do with that information what you will. In the meantime, let's all take a deep breath, calm down and try to stay on topic...

...Which is Dido's house. Hate the claustrophobic feeling house, love the location, and honestly I got really tired of hearing that Thank You song. And if the kitchen is so good, why don't we see a picture? It's just amazing to me how much money some of these famous people have when you hardly even know who they are.

Anonymous said...

Thanks folks, for the info on the bird streets. LA fascinates me. My in-laws live there, so I'm familiar with the city and have spent lots of time there, but it seems there are so many areas that are considered "enviable," but then the placement of a certain apartment building, for instance, can cause a complete panic among LA based posters and it all goes south, and the house in question might as well be a former leper colony. Very interesting.

I thought New York was the most neighborhood-centric city on earth, but apparently not.

"girl at the bar," thanks for the offer to a friend in need, but I settled on Bourbon...

Anonymous said...

the Birds are quaint? where do they fit in the hierarchy of LA neighborhoods?

i'm with Bentley in that i didn't know too much about them, but i would've started with Bourbon. a sazerac perhaps.

LGB, are you saying mama hired some carpetbaggers to move her numbers up on both hits and comments?

i guess the question is, are you mama, or are you just wearing her robe and slippers?

i ain't a raider, i'm a reader. and a long time one at that.

it's you coming across like the site is YOURS that irks, the whole "my dear family" bit. dude, there may be folks in here that love you like family, tho, i'm guessing you haven't actually met, but the proprietary "my" as you stand at your lecturn is misguided.

hug amongst yourselves.

Anonymous said...

Oh My (Mama's...friend?),

Your aim to be “helpful and not controversial” backed by first-hand inside-info compel me to draw the following conclusions:

Mama writes a blog, yet mocks the concept of commenters that regularly respond?
Mama particularly dislikes “2 or 3” bores? Could you be more specific for Mama? Names please.
Mama disdains attempt readership to diffuse hostile posters via suggesting a détente or a little hug?

In aggregate, I interpret your “helpful” feedback as nothing less than a spokesperson on Mama’s true feelings.

Your comments are disturbing and I prefer to believe you’re at least half wrong, if not totally, because you’ve said a mouthful.

Have another drink, sweetheart.

Anonymous said...

Maybe detente means the "haters" skip over and don't read the "family" comments and the "family" skips over and does not read the "haters" comments?

Does that work?

The house is priced low because the view is very limited, the previous owner built the small"view deck" but one still has to step out side and crane yourself up to get a peak a boo view.and that could be blocked when the neighbor builds. I liked this house when it came on the market at $2,500,000 a few years back before the redo. but its one of those houses that because of the lot and backing right up to the house to the south and then that huge viva las vegas palace one house away .. .. its just not worth driving up this far into the hills with out a real view

She's now married to a british writer, and living London again.
