Mariah Carey Buys West Coast Crib

BUYER: Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon Carey
LOCATION: Antelo Road, Bel Air, CA
PRICE: around $7,000,000 (allegedly)
SIZE: 11,750 square feet (approx.), 5 bedrooms, 8 bathrooms
DESCRIPTION: Magnificent gated private view estate on 3 acres. Incredible site. Prime Bel Air address. Staggering 360 degree vus of entire city.

YOUR MAMAS NOTES: Turns out all the hoopla, head spinning and spilt ink regarding music super star Mariah Carey buying couture queen Suzanne Saperstein's near mythic mansion in the Holmby Hills area of Los Angeles was just that...hoopla. That certainly comes and no surprise to Your Mama who never imagined that the wild and wonderfully kooky Miz Saperstein would ever allow her real estate baby to slip into the hands of a woman likely turn her heavily gilded ballroom into a hair and nail salon and stuff her boo-dwar with a bunch of Hello Kitty crap which is, apparently, one of the whistle stop wonder's preferred decorating motifs.

According to our sources Allez Oup as well as the legendarily knowledgeable Lucy Spillerguts, Your Mama has learned that Miss Carey and her huzband Nick Cannon Carey dumped "around seven million" smackers on a house high in the hills above Bel Air that once belonged to poster princess and original angel Farrah Fawcett, who is, bless her pap hating heart, being ravaged by the cancer even as we type our fingers to the nubbins.

A peep into and a poke around property records reveals that Miz Fawcett sold the Antelo Road residence back in 1999 to a prolific and Grammy winning music engineer/producer named Allen Sides who has used his pin sharp musician's ear while working with music masters like like Eric Clapton, Faith Hill, Mary J. Blige, the incomparable Joni Mitchell, Ray Charles, Ella Fitzgerald, André Previn and that freaky (and deceased) Frank Zappa dude to name just a few. No doubt, the man has crossed musical paths with Miss Mariah a time or two as well.

Thanks to Our Fairy Godmother in Bel Air, we've learned that Mister and Missus Sides listed their dee-voonly secluded 3-acre estate above Stone Canyon in August of 2008 with an asking price of $9,500,000. Before long, the asking price had been sliced, diced, slivered and slashed to $6,995,000 and shortly thereafter the property was removed from the open market but was still, we understand, shopped around off-market. Then along came Miss Mariah who, records show, quietly closed on the property in early April of 2009 for an as yet undisclosed sum of money.

Property records show the sprawling, multi-winged mansion measures 9,951 square feet with 6 bedrooms and 7 bathrooms. However, listing information we managed to get our grubby mitts on shows the house spans 11,750 square feet (approx.) and includes 5 bedrooms and 8 bathrooms. We don't know why the discrepancy.

Anyhoo, listing information shows that in addition to all the bedrooms, terlit rooms and seven fireplaces, the 2-story center hall traditional includes formal living and dining rooms, den, family room, lanai, library/study (as if), media room, office, an eat in kitchen, and while listing information does not say so, we would not be remotely surprised to learn there is a recording studio on the property. This would, obviously, be a wonderful convenience that would allow Miss Mariah to warble and slide up and down every note on the damn scale without ever changing out of her robe, which we'd bet our long bodied bitches Linda and Beverly is one of those shorty numbers that barely covers her nether regions.

The grounds include two motor courts, a huge rectangular swimming pool with a pool side pavilion, a large brick terrace with long views down the rugged canyon towards downtown Los Angeles, several flat lawn areas, a gazebo, and three gated entrances, all of which Your Mama can assure the children will be secured with armed sentries prepared to pepper an automobile with a curtain of bullets should anyone be stoopid enough to try and peer through Miss Mariah's tall hedges. Don't even think about it children. Seriously. If you think Ellen Degeneres is serious about her security, then you ain't seen nothing compared to the pretzeling Miss Mariah's burly men will do to anyone who gets nosy enough to cruise on by hoping to catch a glimpse of Our Lady of the Micro Mini and Hair Extensions.

In New York City, Miss Mariah still owns a tremendous triplex apartment in TriBeCa and down in the Bahamas, she owns a multi-acre ocean front compound on guard gated Eleuthera Island where the soft sands are, natch, Miss Mariah's favorite color, pink.

She may be a bit crazy, but she doesn't make bad real estate decisions. Of course, you had me a "two motor courts", Mama.

Perhaps it's just the angle of the shot, but the neighbor's house is sure close to the pool & that wing of the house.

I hope she stocks up on MiracleGrow for that row of hedges to help with the privacy.

OK........so it has a relatively new roof with many shingles. What a disappointment that she chose this Ueber Tract House.

Since I have a home in the 'hood, I visited this home back in the day of Farrah. It was divoon. Gracious, calming, tranquel and the ultimate California lifestyle.

I've seen many homes in the Platinum Triangle and none took my breathe away like this one.

I don't know how it looks now but in the 80's, it was lovely indeed.

Go Mariah. She may be crazy, but she is timing the real estate market quite well and getting a good deal on this house...

The neighbors house is pretty close, but its separated by a tall vegitation barrier / hedge wall. Much of her acreage is just hillside that spills down into a huge area in the canyon.

The estate next door (3121 Antelo) not in the picture is presently for sale for $17,500,000... its about 15k sq ft. Makes her buy look like a great deal cuz that house is totally dated and needs a decorating overhaul. But someone will surely buy it now knowing that besides having their own private 2.5 acre promontory down a long gated drive / roadway, shared with Mariah, they will enjoy her security goons as well.

The house you are talking about next door belongs to Barbi Benton and her developer husband George Gradow. It is also available for lease. They need to come to reality with that asking price because it's not going to happen.

Wilt Chamberlains former house sold down the street for $6.55m and now the former Fawcett house sells bothing showing how dramatically overpriced that house is.

As for Mariah's new house... Mr Big Time did a write up a while back.

How comes this house is in Bel Air, yet when you do satellite on Google, it sure looks close to Sherman Oaks? Doesn't the same snobbery exist this far east with regard to the issues over BHPO?

Everyone says Paris' Clerendon Road digs are Sherman,so do you see what I mean?

Can anyone help?

her mom lives in the house that is right up against the east side of her new house. they share sugar.

Anon 12:01

Mulholland is the original cut off for Bel Air & Beverly Hills Post Office... at one time everything north of Mulholland was either Studio City or Sherman Oaks.

However, developers have paid hefty fees to annex much of the are north of Mulholland into the zip codes they wanted.

This area is truly Bel Air while Mulholland Estates while Zip Coded to BHPO is really in Sherman Oaks, over by eastern BHPO alot of the area north of Mulholland is techincally Studio City (The Summit / Lance Bass's house).

While Mariahs house is really in Bel Air zip code regional wise... there is major snobbery issues regaurding the difference between Bel Air "proper", and this area of Bel Air. Same as Beverly HIlls proper and BHPO.

this area often refered to as upper bel air is a lot less desirable than lower bel air property. like anon 12:23 said, it is really in the bel air limits, its just not the heart of bel air.

the true socialite snobs brush off upper bel air just the same as BHPO is brushed off as more common and lowely.

that said, while the house next door that is up for sale is overpriced... i think it could be an amazing trophy property with a decorating overhaul.

Did ya'll see the Hot Property Column about Mike Mdeavoy taking his house off the market? HAHA Pretending that "they can't find anything they like out there." Puh-lease gurl, more like the hedous house just won't sell for what they want and the 27k sq ft 40 BP selling gave them a reality check on where they should be in price.

This is a pretty nice house. When I first started my house hunting I look at this place. It's beautiful inside and out. It's great piece of property.

This makes much more sense than that Saperstein nonsense.

Well I'll be darned. This home just happens to be one I saved the MLS photos for when it was listed last year. I created an ImageShack account today to share them with anyone interested in something akin to a virtual tour. There are 27 in all, and they are of a decent size.

Enjoy :) Link

Kudos to you Mama for getting to the bottom of the Mariah mystery house. I knew you would. Many thanks!

Anonymous said...

thanks angeleyes. this sure is an ugly house, layout and decore. the only room worth oohing over is the woodsy room with the skylights and stone fireplace. I just wouldn't want to be around in a heavy rain in that room, skylights installed like that are prone to leak quite often.

You're very welcome 1:50. This home has an East Hampton, Long Island vibe to it which may have factored into why Mariah chose it. Awhile back I recall someone here mentioning that Mariah seems to prefer more traditional architecture.

BTW, a possible reason for the square footage discrepancy Mama mentioned - the listing description for this home back in 2008 said it also has an indoor racquetball court.

Thanks for the link Angeleyes--always fun to see as many pictures as possible.

who is her designer???? i need to find them.

This is not the house I would think Mimi would buy. It's smaller than her bacheleorette apartment.

Anonymous said...

I can totally see Mariah in this house. And to the person talking about the skylights leaking, you need a better contractor. I have 7 of them installed like that and not a one has ever leaked a drop.

anon 6:32 - Mimi's trying to become a mama. Bigger is not always better when you're chasing toddlers.

It's almost 12,000 damn square feet... only a commenter here would complain about size.

I definitely like parts of it from the pics - thanks angeleyes - but from the aerials it looks like it has an awkward flow. I picture endless hallways with odd turns and angles.

it's very lovely however the grounds need some tlc. i thought farah had a tennis court on this property?

Yuck....I would rather live in that gitanic penthouse she has in New York.

I hope she falls off the bluff.

This house has a funky layout and the kitchen area is horrible but... I really like this house. The lodge room with the large open ceiling is perfect for family gatherings or dancing and the yard is flat and has wonderful views. Nicely done Ms Mariah... you're on fire!

Confirmed sale price is: $6,975,069
Gotta hand it to Mariah for getting it under asking price. Maybe she screeched until they caved in?

Ugly house, its a bigger version of Lance Bass's Mulholland mess.... which he some how sold.

I think the woodsy room is what one time was the raquette ball court.... not sure whaty they did in the recent rehab of this house cuz its gross and need to be gutted.... the cabinetry all looks so Home Depot Special.

Relatively cheap, compare 7m to the 35m Jennifer Aniston got for her house in Beverly Hills in 2011.
