UPDATE: Oprah Winfrey

Yesterday the real estate blogs were abuzz with stories about Oprah Winfrey having a look-see at a $68,000,000 house in Alpine, NJ. Well, buttons, Miz Thing tweeted this morning that not only is she not moving to Alpine but that she never even went to look at the house and she's not sure how that rumored got started. Make of that what you will.

It was a stunt by the Realtor to get the property on the news. Oprah would never live there. Only a recluse, someone who is very very private, or likes the idea of rural living would like Alpine. The town offers absolutely nothing unless your idea of local shopping is a citgo gas station and the post office. That is all there is in town.

Plausible deniability?

Well she'd be the only woman who could afford such a house. Hell, she could buy the whole state of New Jersey if she wanted to.

She'd be the only woman who could afford such a house? What? There's hundreds of female Billionaires & even more who have hundreds of millions ... that's ridiculous, Oprah is at the bottom end when it comes to billionaires!

There are not hundreds of female billionaires...

Anyway:

Something tells me Oprah will be buying/building a house in Los Angeles. You think Oprah wants to have a house in NJ where is snows? Highly doubtful.

She's got the place in Montecito so one in Bel Air or Beverly Hills would be fitting especially if much of her network will be based in LA.

I agree with the sentiment that she wouldn't be buying a place in Jersey. If she were to buy something in this area, it'd probably be something like 15CPW.

Yeah, this reeks of desperate realtors and sellers.

Maybe maybe not, she was in New York the week before

The "rumor" started at Ruport Murdoch's rag, The NY Post. It claims a full page exclusive by Post writer Jennifer Keil.

When you read these rumors - consider the source.

Jennifer Keil's late husband, Brandon Keil, practically invented real estate gossip journalism. Jennifer has taken over his column, but so far I'm not blown away by her writing. However, we have to presume a lot of his reliable sources are also feeding her, although they might not have the same level of loyalty, and there are many more people in the game now. If she got duped by someone it was probably a secondary kind of thing; in other words, her reliable source has the cover of having mistakenly trusted someone else who brought in the info.

Yes, the NY Post is a tabloid and that means it tends to publish a certain type of story, but that does not mean those stories are not generally well reported.
Murdoch also owns the Times of London and the Wall Street Journal. You may not like their editorial slant, but it's absurd to suggest they are fundamentally not reliable just because they are owned by him.

However, the story was published under Jennifer Keil's byline and there is going to be blow back for her, both inside and outside the paper. If she convinced the editors to go with the story, and claimed she had put all her ducks in a row, then she's got a problem. If they knew the story had problems and went with it anyway, that's another story. Either way, not good for her reputation, as trivial as the whole thing really is.

Why would Oprah live in poor/ghetto LA when she can fly in from a civilized place like Montecito?

The New York Post has ran many a story before verification. There should have been an alternative or additional source of information prior to its publication..it is not who had the story first but who had it right. that being said . I love Mama's references to sources before she puts it out and admitting it may not even have a spec of truth but it is with that touch of love ..that we love..about the house/home/habitat that nobody does like she does.

Since when is LA "poor/ghetto"?

Beverly Hills, Bel-Air, Holmby Hills, Brentwood, Malibu, Santa Monica, Bixby Hills, Hancock Park...all areas with multi-million dollar homes with respectable citizens living in them. ALL within LA County borders!

Ignorance is not bliss.

sweetie, LA is amongst the poorest cities in the United States. You might want to get your facts checked. Even Detroit has a higher % of millionaires than Los Angeles (according to stats).

She should stay here in fabulous Montecito.

Anon 6:59 & 10:03:

You're after the wrong riffraff. Oppphhhhra's vulgar estate in Montecito is a blight on good taste, a caricature to overcompensation, endemic of the binging/bloating bigga-dumba-betta saccharine mcfantasy castles that have no relation to the lore of the land. More better in Texas. Should they bulldoze Oprahworld --and they should, before the pilgrims come-- half a dozen fine estates could be rooted to restore the scale and flora of the seaside garden that is Montecito.

As to the poor; they're trapped in the LA basin. In Montecito, they commute.
