Goldie Hawn Re-Lists Malibu White Elephant

SELLERS: Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell
LOCATION: Malibu, CA
PRICE: $11,200,000
SIZE: 4,195 square feet, 4 bedrooms and 4.5 bathrooms

YOUR MAMAS NOTES: Poor Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell. Despite a lot of Buddhist-looking gewgaws and doo-dads they just don't seem to have very good real estate karma when it comes to the Zen-ed out, late-1970s contemporary on Malibu's Broad Beach they've been trying to rent and/or sell for about as long as Your Mama has been slinging dirt about celebs and their real estate activities.

In May 2007 and again in May 2008 the Tinseltown icons put their 4 bedroom and 4.5 bathroom beach house out for lease at $95,000 per month. By the summer of 2010 they'd dropped the asking price to $80,000 and put the (approximately) 4,195 square foot residence up for sale with an asking price of $14,749,000.

This May, the real estate merry-go-round has brought the Russell-Hawn beach house back for lease at $80,000 per month—no pets, please—and they've tossed their real estate albatross back on the market with a significantly lower asking price of $11,200,000.

A lush courtyard connects the detached triple car-garage to a double-height foyer that steps down to an ocean-side living room with vaulted ceiling, fireplace, wet bar area (with unfortunate and upsetting tented ceiling treatment), and more candles than a Catholic church. The adjoining, ocean side dining room opens to a well-equipped center island kitchen outfitted with all the high-end finishes and commercial-style stainless steel appliance to be expected in an 11-plus million dollar beach house.

Upstairs, the voluminous, ocean-facing master bedroom has a vaulted wood ceiling, river rock fireplace, private ocean-side terrace, large closet and bathroom finished with Chinese onyx. The main residence encompasses, as best as we can surmise form listing information, two more guest suites (one up, one down), a Creston powered media room (just off the entry) and what listing information describes as a "fab office" with built-in, U-shaped work space. The detached guest house above the garage has a second kitchen, an exercise room and a meditation space that looks like it's marinated in incense and can, as per listing information, do double-duty as a guest bedroom.

The back wall of the house, a towering wall of smoked glass, looks out and opens to a large ocean side entertainment and dining terrace protected from the prying eyes of paps and beach goers by rolling sand dunes. One side of the terrace is anchored by a built-in grilling station and the other by a carved wood pergola probably antique and probably imported from a shrine of some sort in Bombay or Jakarta. Thickets of tropical foliage frame the postcard perfect view past the picket fence and over the sand dunes towards the melodramatic magnificence of the Pacific Ocean.

A few of the other high-profile peeps who own ocean front homes along Broad Beach—punished in some sections by a serious erosion issue—include Steven Spielberg, Jami Gertz, Ray Romano, Pierce Brosnan, Mike Ovitz, Danny Devito and Rhea Pearlman, Dustin Hoffman, Marvel Studios magnate Avi Arad, tool and die tycoon Eric Smidt and money manager Mark Attanasio.

Mister Russell and Miz Hawn's main residence in Los Angeles sits just 22 (or so) miles to the east behind an electronic gate and high hedges in the heart of the low-key but very ritzy Riviera area of Pacific Palisades. The bought the nearly 6,000 square foot spread for $4,124,591 in August 2004, a few months before they sold the much larger mansion across the street to comedian Adam Sandler for $12,000,000. Daughter Kate Hudson and English man-friend/baby daddy Matt Bellamy—the sprite-like lead singer of Muse—live a few blocks away in a star-style compound comprised of two side-by-side mansions.

Mister Russell and Miz Hawn also maintain a penthouse in Midtown Manhattan (bought June 1998 for $3,850,000), a lake-front compound in  Rosseau, Ontario, Canada, and a 70-or-so-acre compound just outside Snowmass, CO with two large residences, several barns, at least three ponds and one tennis court and swimming pool.

The beach itself is steadily disappearing -- you'd have to be nuts to pay major $$ for property there! (BTW Mama, not to quibble, but the Hawn/Russell Palisades property is located East - and not West - of the Malibu property.)

oh, darlin' you are correct. it's east and not west. thanks.

Should I feel bad that these two can't sell their property on an eroding beach?

Naw, they probably bought the place to get away from the little people. Tough Tits, sugar plums!!

Mama - They also have a house in Palm Desert. I heard a rumor that they are also building a new house in California, but I haven't been able to find out where.

Too bad the decor isnt "erroding" or dissapearing.

I second that, anon. 12:22!!!!
too much clutter here!

nothng stands out, all cluttered up.
and a bit outdated for THAT price.

Geeez! This is a multi-million mansion, I must say! I love the concept of the master’s bedroom facing the ocean. Plus the fact that anyone who can afford to buy this house will be in line with the famous Hollywood actors, brings such overwhelming feeling!

Sounds like poor Goldie could use some "Jewish lightening" on this place. She and Kurt are probably the only people in Malibu who hear of a wildfire in the area and cross their fingers that an ember will hit their house.

Goldie was interviewed on Babs Walters in that house when she was hawking her 1983(?) dud, "SWING SHIFT" (Babs made her cry). She was also on the cover of People in that home in 1982 - a cover story about the glory of Malibu.

What part of town is thier NYC penthouse? Upper West?I love pop culture, but am not a fan of hers -highly overrated and one lucky lady. I didn;t say a word about the trout mouth surgery. But she can laugh... if only I had JUST her pocket change it would make my life a little easier. Thanks for the fantasy ride as always Mamma.

I am speechless.

It looks like it could be the setting for a 1970s Jaclyn Smith movie on Lifetime.

Goldie has had that since the seventies and bought it out /took it over when she split with the brother that she was living with or married to from "The Hudson Brothers" comedy act,(he is daughter Kate's dad). They paid in the n'hood of $300k back in the mid 70's for it. With straight inflation, it would be valued at $1.4 million. Broad Beach just safeguarded itself with boulders for the erosion. Average houses are $10 to $15 out there. Her house is extremely close to "Malibu West's" Beach club which is itself, only yards away from the public beach due east. It IS a double lot, but it will be a hard sell at 11 million - the celebrity aspect of it will still fetch her about 10 million. Easy money. Gosh, it is good to live in that stratosphere of wealth - 95% of these rich entertainers are not even talented. Just luck - right places, right time and some tenacity. I shouldn't point fingers though, all I do is pay my bills, love my pets and dream of such wealth

That decor is what happens when you smoke too much pot!

Goldie has always been a yawn and overworn the "custsie, bubbly" act of hers long ago. Even at 70, she acts as if she is trying out for cheerleading, OR NOW ...sometimes, wears her "enlightened" hat on chat shows with her horridly lifted face. WHO realy cares Goldie? I hope she gets half of what she wants - GREEED and fooling herself that she is important and has added to ths world. Yuck to the house too.

Does Kurt Russel have hits? Must be action films that do OK overseas, cuz I don't think of him "opening" a film here ...maybe for an hour in the eighties?

LOL on Goldie and her cheerleading days being over She is always wearing Asian inspired sahris (sp), maybe her connection to the Ballanese design in the house. I you-tubed,( a verb!), it and there is a Barbara Walters interview in that house, but it was "kick back' 80's beach style then. And James' comment above is right, the house is 2 down from the end of the private beach, next to the beach club. easily argued as too close to the ickey ,poor, trashy public. I don't think a celeb name is gonna override that fact and fetch anything over $9 million, but I ain't no Madison Hildabrand.

BTW - I looked up Jamie Gertz as your article mentioned she was also on Broad Beach. She really IS and in a much nicer spot than Goldie and Kurt. Ms Gertz also has a mega big house in town next to Rod Stewart! Where did she get that kind of money? Is she married to a big-time director or an old man industry exec,is she an hieress? With her short, kinda forgotten career, I would have thought she'd be in a small Hollywood cottage. Anyhoo, good luck to Ms. Hawn and Mr. Russell. At $80k monthly rental, they should allow pets. They'll sell it at some point for a reduced rate. Mel Gibson slashed his price too and that is a true compound, (although not on the beach, but in beautiful Serra Retreat). I am still more facsinated by the whole Jamie Gertz propery portfolio ....how the heck?

You deserve the opportunity to make money, Mama, but these ads are too much. They are invasive and horrendous! Until you find something less invasive I don't want to visit and deal with this. Sorry. Love ya.

What a stunning property! Have seen the property and your old pictures do not do it justice. Probably one of the the nicest master bedrooms on the beach, and the floorplan is open and wonderful. Even with the beach erosion, the property is still situated on a great deep section of sand (the beach is scheduled to be replenished in 2013 per the Homeowners Association and the City of Malibu). BTW the property was originally listed in July 2011 (just over 9 months ago) not 2010 - get your facts straight...

To Anonymous above... One MIGHT THINK you were the realtor or Goldie's camp with the glowing reviews and selling prowesss to your post. The house is at the end of the beach next to a beach club, and 20 feet away further is the very public ZUMA BEACH. 11 million to walk out, (now over the boulders), to the shore and be among throngs of summer beach people... No thanks.

BTW Mamma - yes, ads are annoying, but they are part of the 'net these days as is/ period end. I can navigate thru yours with ease. If they make you a little money, then go for it.

Now that is a beautiful house, I always like Kurt Russel. Who knew he has such good taste in real property.

Jamie- Hmmm, The Beach Club is located several houses away, and Zuma Beach is more like a block away (with Trancas Creek and Broad Beach Lane separating the public beach from Broad Beach Road), perhaps you need a new tape measure? (definitely NOT 20 feet). I grew up in the area, and Broad Beach still has the deepest dunes in Malibu. Not a realtor or her camp, just someone who appreciates the home and the area.
