YOUR MAMAS NOTES: As we so often do while we're sucking down our first in and tonic of the day, Your Mama was sitting at our beloved and beat up Saarinen table in our big ol' kitchen flipping through the Los Angeles real estate listings yesterday afternoon when we came across a house at the tippy-top of the Outpost Estates area that grabbed our fancy.

So, as Your Mama so often does, we peeped into the property records for the Robert Byrd designed digs on Outpost Drive that's listed at $2,495,000 and lo and behold it's owned by comedian and boob-toob actor Anthony Clark who some of the children may recognize from his six seasons on a not very funny sit-com called Yes, Dear or perhaps from his stints on the 1990s programs Boston Common and Soul Man, neither of which has Your Mama ever seen nor heard of.

Property records show that Mister Clark, perhaps one of the few out homosexual actors who have been allowed by the Hollywood establishment to play straight guy parts, purchased the 2,712 square foot house in July of 2006 for $1,590,000. Listing information states the rustic and shingled house was renovated and restored in 2007 and includes an easy to manage 3 bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms. Listing information states that each of the three bedrooms has its own private pooper which means the master(s) of the house will always be spared the indignity and olfactory abusing odors of overnight guests.

Listing information indicates the house still sports the original pine floors, wood beamed ceilings, cedar paneling and brick walls. We're not a big fan of the brick wall look, but given that it's an original feature of Mister Byrd's design, we appreciate that it was retained.

Although Your Mama does like Mission style furniture and generally speaking it works pretty well in this house, overall the interior day-core is, at best, lackluster and could definitely use a wave of the sparkle wand by a nice gay decorator. (Come now Mister Anthony, surely you know a design queen or two who could help you.)

While Your Mama and the Dr. Cooter's inclination would have been to gut the kitchen and replace it with something a little less rustic, we're respectful of Mister Anthony's choice at retaining (and restoring) the house's original cabinetry and installing new-fangled stainless steel appliances such as a heavy duty double drawer dishwasher and a six-burner range.

Because of the down sloping lot, the exterior spaces are somewhat limited and don't provide much room for a swing set or a swimming pool, at least not without some serious geologic engineering.. However, the large covered terrace with its brush stone floor and canyon view makes Your Mama go all goose pimply with envy.

The property sits just above ack-turus Scarlett Johansson's approximately $8,000,000 Senalda Drive dwelling as well as the mini-estate of Desperate Housewive's Felicity Huffman and her huzband William H. Macy, a man with actual acting chops.

It's unclear why Mister Anthony would choose to sell this lovely house after spending the time, money and energy renovating and restoring it, but it could be because property records indicate he also owns another house in the Outpost Estates, on nearby Senalda Drive, which records show was purchased in July of 2007 for $1,200,000.

Perhaps some of the children will find it interesting that among many other Los Angeles residences architect Robert Byrd, the man responsible for the shingles and bricks of this house, also designed Frank Zappa's legendary "Rock and Roll Tree House" in Laurel Canyon, the Cielo Drive house where the infamous Mansion murders took place–which has been replaced with a obscene mcmansion–and the home in Encino where comedian Phil Hartman was murdered by his wife before she took her own life.

perhaps he's selling b/c he knows that if he doesn't sell now, he's going to have to take a bath on the property in the future. this ship is going down, even for celebs.

Mr. Clark was born just down the road from here. I do love a fellow Old Dominion-er, although I hated "Yes, Dear."

I like it.

But I'm really ready for that color/type of stone in the bathroom to go out of fashion. This is better than most, and at least it's not arranged in a diamond pattern, but the general look screams Arizona tract housing or DIY Home Depot flip to me.

Also, I liked Boston Common. Was sorry it didn't have a longer life.

i like it, house makes sense to me.
especially the part about being a pair of binoculars away from scarlett johannsen

Hey PCH, I liked Boston Common too! Underrated show, and he was very funny in it. I've seen Yes, Dear a few times...not even close.

Nice house.

he used to rent a house from me a few years back, cool nice guy, always had some nice eye candy playing basket ball in the drive way, last i spoke with him , he also had a house on doheny (madam alexs old digs heidi fleiss boss who passed away) he was moving and investing in austin texas

pch, I agree with you about the bathroom tile/stone. Yuck.

Otherwise, I do like this house. Anthony did a good job retaining the Robert Byrd-ness.

Why to these dumbass celebrities keep moving? If you are selling your house after 1-2 years you are completely lost.

Also outpost estates is high with break-ins. Properties here are very secluded, there is no police patrol, and the time the LAPD get to your door the dudes are already selling the TV in downtown.

Crikey Mama. I turn my back for two minutes, and you hit the ground running with all these new year postings!

If it weren't for the fabulous terrace, this house would leave me flaccid.

He always did ping my gaydar.

I love this house. A dutch door - how cool is that?

12:53 - No different than any other part of the hills that are City of Los Angeles. Which is why we have armed patrol security services. Outpost is actually safer than many other hillside areas.

A very handsome house but the photos make me wonder if this guy is color blind. I'd scarper with that bed in a nanosecond!

I am also not an outpost fan. i need nice scenary when i drive home, by the time you make it past the tacky motels on labrea or the strip mall look of the "new hollywood" .... well, once i made a right past the old magic castle and that honky tonk motel, i would be in a severe depression, keep me west of lacienega and north of sunset and i will be a happy camper. but its ok if staff wants to live there.

Anonymous said...

Good eye for the bedframe, Snowman. But the chair's mine, okay? But think I'll pass that old oven door turned sideways (?) over the headboard. And very cool in a preservationally funky way that the kitchen was left intact.

I half expect Ricky to walk in the back door any second ... Lucy, I'm home.

I'd like inform you that Scarlett Johansson (actress)actually is a clone from original person, who has nothing with acting career.Clone was created illegally using stolen biomaterial.Original Scarlett Galabekian last name is nice, CHRISTIAN young lady.I'll tell more, those clones(it's not only 1)made in GERMANY-world leader manufacturer of humans clones,it's in Ludwigshafen am Rhein,Rhineland-Palatinate,Mr.Helmut Kohl home town. You can't even imaging the scale of the cloning activity. But warning,H.Kohl staff strictly controlling their clones spreading around the world, they're NAZI type disciplined and mind controlled,be careful get close with clones you will be controlled too.Original family didn't authorize any activity with stolen biomaterials,no matter what form it was created in,it's all need to be back to original family control in Cedars-Sinai MedicalCenter in LA.Controlling clones is US military operation.Original Scarlett never was engaged,by the way

Is this house nice?

All I remember from Boston Commons was Darlene Pritchett, that's it.

Sergal - You're as nuts as Average Joe. Pretty wild that you have set up a whole blog devoted to suggesting people *not* post stories about Scarlett Johansson, not do anything that would promote her career...yet a) YOU are promoting her by writing about her, and b) you suggest that people not "wait for the FBI to knock on your door" from promoting her yet you apparently don't think anyone will come after YOU for slandering her?

Like I said..As crazy as Average Joe. Maybe you two should marry.

""cause I'm EASY, aaa ahhh aaa ahhh. easy like Sunday morning...!!!"
boy do i wanna crank that in this place! minus the furniture, this place is divoon. gimme some magenta bouganvilla and a couple of ferns and i'm in heaven.

Great house. Looks very comfortable.

But I agree with Mrs. Drysdale, who would want to drive past the legendary Magic Castle and Yamashiro when you can get stuck in traffic at all the nightclubs, strip clubs, tanning salons, and tourist traps on the WeHo Sunset Strip. That's a way better entrance to a neighborhood.

Anonymous said...

A quick look at a map shows that the most efficient to get to this house is NOT up Outpost Drive, but rather thru the Cahuenga Pass and up Mulholland Drive. At least that's how I'd go.

Anonymous said...

8:48..... since when did dept of motor veh let BLIND people drive?. you need to stay off the road ways yes, hotel Yamashiro is stuck on the top of the hill, no way, you can even catch a glance of it as you fight traffic on lovely franklin and try to fight off the bums attacking your car from the park where they hang out across the street. Magic castle had its day, legendary?maybe for all the old red buttons types inside but certainly not for the architecture.... drive sunset east through bev hills, wave to Ms teleflora, mr. figi water, now thats a lendgendary house, stop at the bhills hotel , wave to the old ex miss philcollins tudor mansion. up to the sunset strip... but don't go east of la cienega. now thats living....... ah, the good life...

Anonymous said...

Trudy - You got it right. No one in that part of Outpost ever sees Franklin.

That was the clear sign that "Mrs. Drysdale" aka "Mrs. Riprock" has only ever seen the Hollywood Hills on her black & white portable boob toob while sitting in her own filth in a fiberglass tub drinking a bottle of Boone's Farm and burning a Airwick candle for "ambience".

Anonymous said...

Oh and Miz Riprock - Yamashiro is a restaurant, not a hotel.

Anonymous said...

This is a nice place in the hills, but definitely nothing to write home about! The style is very main-stream USA, and the Day-cor is straight up Brady Bunch meets Three's Company.
BTW... obviously Franklin Ave is a pain in the ass going East, sitting behind a thousand other cars heading for the 101. But taking Cahuenga to get to this house rather than Franklin? That's only logical if your coming from East of the 101 and trying to avoid Bowl traffic (good luck), or if you're coming back over the hill from the Valley.

Anonymous said...

HC -

The Bowl is only going from late-May to September other than occasional lease events. The rest of the time it is a ghost town (like now). If you live around here, you learn to pay attention to their calendar of events.

Franklin & Highland (just east of Outpost) is the busiest intersection in all Los Angeles.

Getting to Outpost via Franklin is definitely only for those who don't know where they are going. Cahuenga to Mulholland would be the preferred (quickest) route and there are several ways to do the same coming from the west without going as far east as Cahuenga.

I do Cahuenga/Mulholland and never have problems.

Another easy shortcut is to go up Fuller (west of La Brea) to Hillside and jump on Outpost a couple of blocks above Franklin.

Don't question me . I am all knowing, Yamashiro was orig estate, then brothel, military boys school, apts, hotel , and there are still rooms there.....At the outbreak of World War II, anti-Japanese sentiment spread rapidly in Hollywood and throughout the country. In the post Pearl Harbor paranoia, Yamashiro was mistakenly rumored to be a signal tower for the Japanese. Much of the beautiful landscaping and decorative elements of the palace itself were stripped by vandals. Yamashiro’s distinctive Asian architecture was disguised, the beautiful carved woods covered with paint, and the estate became a boys’ military school.
At the end of the war with Japan, a builder bought the property, added a second story, and converted Yamashiro into 15 apartment units. Then in 1948, the estate, unrecognizable and in disrepair, was purchased by Thomas O. Glover, who originally intended to tear down the structure and develop a hotel and apartment units on the seven acres of property. While preparing to demolish, he discovered the treasure of ornate woodwork and silk wallpaper hidden under layers of black paint. He realized that this was too important to destroy and decided to restore the property. This became a 20-year project which continues even today.

Anonymous said...

Good - you know how to google search for the history page on Yamashiro's site.

Too bad you had trouble reading the page when you found it.

Yamashiro has NEVER been a hotel. The current owner's father did purchase the property 60 years ago with the INTENTION of building a hotel but as you pointed out, he discovered the hidden treasure and never went through with it.

It has been a residence, a private club, a boys school, apartments (briefly - less than a decade), and a restaurant. You may be confusing the Yamashiro Apartments built later on the hillside below the restaurant behind the Magic Castle.

This is hard, but something i have faced all my life. I am of higher intelligence than most, actually than 90%of the people in the world, and 99.99% of the people in los angeles, (regarding los angeles, we have found the higher percentage is due to the large population of porn stars and hooker realtors..... (you know who you are... jon douglas sluts... greg gorman sugar boys who sent their young boyfriends home to ohio? when the cash started to flow, malibu massage therapist boy toys who sucked up to movie moguels and their friends to carve out a living as a hooker realtor.
ok so, my memory and intelligence established........ oh, wait, i forgot, frontiers mag hookers massage therapists who start their own little realty companies, but this one i will leave alone, he is a good guy, but wait, one last tidbit.. top , top top hllywood hills "mover and shaker" (in his mind) who actually was trying to sell me water pik tooth systems the last time the bottom dropped out, good for him that he is now selling 10m properties, but remember, save those comms$. so........parnell roberts from bonnanza fame. lived in one of the guest houses, many years ago, i was a toddler, and came to visit, the Yamishiro was then a place where you could stay overnigth. and pay for that privilege( that would qualify it to be a "hotel, motel, motor inn" whatever term you choose my little websit BITCH MO, before you take such a strong stance, realize that yes information goes way beyond google, its called life experience. not something that is easily picked up working front desk at 24hrs fitness ....... wait, i forgot someone.. no no no , not the chick that had acid thrown in her face when she was a hooker in vegas before realestate fame... no i wanted to talk about the blonde in the "milk" ads who gave great , no incredible blow jobs to jon douglas. no, wait it was not her, it was the shoe salesboy from rodeo drive. who ate material girls brothers ass for years to get is realtor referrals. damn i get all these hooker realtors mixed up, i wanted to cover.. well, i just will need to pick this up later.......i am overloaded for tonight

Oh my, this is quaint. But I think I could live in it. The entrance, garage area is terrible, though. Bathroom is a bit generic, though.

Rona darling, Here are your meds. The doctor will check on you later.

Note to chart: Need to up the meds. She's delusional beyond normal. Perhaps there is leakage from the butt cheek implants.

What does everyone have against wood?....the colors, textures......plain, carved, oiled, varnished...it is organic and gorgeous.

Anonymous said...

Dahling..The little people don't have fabulous wood like that in their sad little Navajo White painted drywall box apartments. All they know is that horrid faux wood Ikea sells.

Anonymous said...

If you people could only see the view from the back patio! (As I have) It is quite a still frame of Los Angeles! The only thing you can see moving are the cars from the 101 and the wild life of hawks soaring the air above, as well as occasional visits from lizards, and deer.Surrounding the house is quite a number of Jade plants. As far as the interior.. This design needs no contemporary upbringing at all! Anthony, simply kept the appreciation value in tact as Robert Byrd had intended. For the furniture.. if you can afford to buy a house in Hollywood... I'm sure you wouldn't buy it pre-furnished..

Anonymous said...

I could show you what wood should and can do. But you need to come to England where we know how to build large homes with class rather than palaces of excess and overstated decoration. Take a lesson from your compatriot.......Edith Wharton.

Anonymous said...

I like the wood. It's not "modern" but not all houses should be sleek and sexy.

Plus, this house is hardly, as you up there said, a "palace of excess and overstated decoration."

It's expensive, but it's not excessive or over stated at all imho.

Anonymous said...

You are quite correct.......I was thinking about that Landry house the Pale Lady is squating on.
