Seth Meyers Settles Down Downtown

BUYER: Seth Meyers
LOCATION: New York City, NY
PRICE: $3,525,000
SIZE: 994 square feet, 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms

YOUR MAMAS NOTES: Saturday Night Live head writer and mock anchorman Seth Meyers is riding a roller coaster of change. In May (2013) it was announced he would leave his post at SNL and take over for his buddy and former SNL cast mate Jimmy Fallon as the new host of Late Night. In September he married his long-time lady friend, human rights lawyer Alexi Ashe, and last week, we first learned from Dolly B. Downtown, the newly hitched couple paid $3,525,000 for a new apartment in a venerable pre-war building in the heart of New York City's once boho now incredibly chic and expensive West Village.

Listing details show the compact but high-cost, high-floor apartment has two bedrooms and two bathrooms in just 994 square feet with with open views over a broad swathe of downtown Manhattan. There are hardwood floors throughout, pre-war period detailing, and, according to the floor plan, four large closets.

An unexpectedly spacious, five-sided foyer steps down to a 26-foot long living room with wood burning fireplace. A tiny dining room off the foyer (and open to the living room) leads to an even smaller but recently renovated windowed kitchen. One of the bedrooms has French doors from the living room, the other has two walk-in closets, and both have direct access to a small bathroom, one of them with a window.

The children will note that despite the $3.5+ million dollar purchase price, Mister and Missus Meyers will—like many other rich and/or famous people in elegant, desirable and price pre-war buildings in Manhattan—have to make due with window-installed air-conditioning.

I'm perpetually amazed by what people are willing to spend on apartments in NYC. $3.5m and not even 1,000 square feet?? To each his own I guess. Hopefully (and likely) they have another home out of town where they can store all of their crap and spread out on the weekends.

$3.5m for 994 sq feet?!? I know New York real estate is expensive but that's crazy.

Actually, Mama, Mr. Myers will be replacing Mr. Fallon on "Late Night." In turn, Mr. Fallon will be replacing Jay Leno on "The Tonight Show."

(Who can keep up with these things....?)

That price for such a small place is shameful.

Despite the best efforts undertaken to stage this place, as pictured, it still looks like a tenement apartment. For that price, the hopefully forever married couple, couldn't find ANYTHING better?

Seriously! I cannot BELIEVE the real estate prices in Manhattan--and people are paying that?!! I hope some former tenant of that place (who probably shared it with 4 other creative type for a combined $1,500) stumbles across your site and has a good belly laugh at this...a freakin' window unit to boot?!!! Mama, I'm sure you'd join me in relishing doing NYC when it was still gritty, attainable, unpredictable and FUN!

Feels like something he'd buy to host a weekly poker game. Whatever the back story, I'd get someone in there to rip out the dinette wall, gut that corner and hatch an open plan.

Crazy enough, in not too long he's be able to fit four of those units into his Hampton's foyer -- or pool house.

This looks like 299 west 12th st. And that explains the high price

I was thinking exactly the same thing -- 299 W 12th. Some of you will recall that this was the building that Jennifer Aniston made a brief foray into, buying several apartments with the intention to combine them, one having been sold by Sally Hershfelder, celebrity lesbian haircutter to the stars. Of course, Anniston unloaded all of it (to whom. . .?) in short order and before undertaking the combination.

A slew of A gays here as well. And it follows that there are some beautifully decorated apartments, with a number of combinations where a one bedroom is combined with an adjacent studio.
Great clear views from the south side (the entrance side), which faces Abingdon Square, over all of lower Manhattan.

Then again, we may be completely off base. Could well be a different building.

A better guess would be 302 West 12th St.

And a quick check of Streeteasy confirms that it is indeed 302, not 299.

Both Bing and Bing, both condo, not coop, diagonally across Eighth Ave. from one another.

Obviously not the ex Aniston apartment at the top, but a big penthouse spread, in addition to a communal roof terrace with the same fantastic views as 299.

All the A gay stuff the same here, but here we find Sarah Jessica supposedly renting (or was renting) an apartment that she uses to get dressed for events in. Her house is nearby.

The more I study the floorplan, the less likely it seems like an appropriate primary residence for Mr. & Mrs. Myers. Is it possible this is destined to be their in-town pied-a-terre while their primary residence will be somewhere in Westchester or something....?

I live on the west side and this price blows me away.
