Friday Potpourri

Yes, buttons and butter beans, Your Mama and The Dr. Cooter are still, technically, on vacay out with all the greys and gays out in Palm Springs (CA) but here are a few links to tidbits and morsels discussed by some of our friends and associates in the celebrity real estate gossip game to keep you busy as you whittle away the final hours of your 9-to-5 work week.

1.
Professional toker and serious art collector Cheech Marin sold his joint in Malibu. (via the long-legged blond at Trulia)

2.
A Midtown Manhattan penthouse (rumored and reported) to be owned by Oprah Winfrey and (allegedly) briefly occupied by Gayle King went into contract with an unnamed British financier after just a week on the market. (via Miz Gould Keil at the New York Post)

3.
Filthy rich but mouthy actor/filmmaker Mel Gibson has re-listed his 500-acre beachfront spread in Costa Rica with an asking price of $29,800,000. (via the property gossip gals at The Wall Street Journal)

4.
A 9,000 square foot Greek Revival-style townhouse in the natty and naboby section of New York City's Brooklyn Heights 'hood once owned (or maybe it was only leased) by mincing scribe Truman Capote sold for a record breaking $12,500,000 to the British fella who made his mountain of money primarily from the creator/writer/producer of the enormously successful and brutally violent and Grand Theft Auto video games franchise. (via the peeps at the New York Post)

4.
The last residence of Beatle George Harrison—a monstrous, wedding cake of a villa in fancy pants Montagnola, Switzerland—has come up for sale with an undisclosed asking price. (He paid ten million for the Swiss estate in 2001 shortly before he died.) (via the busy real estate beavers AOL)

5.
One of the billionaire Bronfmans—philanthropist and former Seagram CEO Edgar M.—has put the 540-acre family farm outside Charlottesville, VA on the market with a $10,300,000 price tag. (from the property gossip gals at The Wall Street Journal via the ever-industrious kids at Curbed)

6.
And just for shits and giggles here's a little ditty about a hot mess of a mansion in Miami, FL  built by a local hi-rise developer on an island in the center of its own man-made lake and listed for $10,900,000. (from Realtor.com via the ever-industrious kids at Curbed)

Question: I knew Palm Springs in the 1960s and while there were gays there for sure it was not majority gay or identified as such. Now, if I am not mistaken, old central Palm Springs is more or less majority, even perhaps overwhelmingly, gay. When did this happen, or has it been simply a slow development over the last forty years or so?

The Edgar Bronfman place is to the west of Charlottesville, unlike the Kluge estate that is to the east. I used to pass this place almost every day going to and from my country acres located even farther west, nearer the mountains. I had no idea it was as large as it is. PS I think west of Charlottesville is better than east, due precisely to the fact that the Blue Ridge mountains are closer. PSS: Charlottesville area is divine in the fall when the air is crisp, the sky cerulean blue, and the trees ablaze with autumn colors. Not so much the rest of the year, especially July and
August when the temperature is near 100 and the humidity near 95 and bugs are everywhere.

Re: "castle" with moat in Miami. Love to see it after the next hurricane comes anywhere near; and lumps a couple of feet of water on the area and the near by Everglades!

Thanks for the stories Mama. BTW, did you take Lil Gay Boy on vacay with you and Dr. Cooter? We haven't heard from him in quite some time!

The moat house in Miami, omg. Clearly designed for a drug lord. WTF?

"mincing scribe"..........perfect, absolutely perfect! Your tenth grade English teacher would be so proud.....

That moated castle in Homestead looks like some demented attraction that made an escape from Disney World; it would be perfect with actors dressed as Snow White and Mickey Mouse wandering around.

Petra's, I appreciate your asking after me; I tried hiding in Mama's Louis Vuitton bag but when the Ol' Coot went to load it in the big Beemer's trunk my bejeweled iPhone dropped out and the jig was up --- the good doctor was none too pleased, but was kind enough to tell Mama to put away the wooden spoon...

;-)

Truth be told, I started a new job at a major publisher and have been busy roaming the halls, hoping to overhear some juicy tidbits to pass on to Mama.

Congratulations on the new job. You would probably have more fun if it were with a minor publisher but a job is a job.

How did central Palm Springs become such a gay centre? I lived there a long long time ago and sure, there were a few around, but nothing like today! Great blog by the way!

I must confess to missing Lil' Gay Boy as well. Very witty and insightful...the original Arthur Treacher to Mama's Merv Griffin, imho, LMAO.

Let's see...major publishers where there might be real estate tidbits? to me that means Hatchette-Job Fillipachi or Conde Nasty. Keep those ears perked up, girl!
