A spacious corner paneled Library and well-proportioned Formal Dining Room featuring 18th century French panels overlook a sunny, south-facing terrace with majestic views of the city and Central Park....

YOUR MAMAS NOTES: Your Mama loves us some Joan Rivers with her potty mouth, scathing humor and a face that looks like Madame. So when we heard from New York Ned and then read in the New York Times that the sassy septuagenarian had listed her Upper East Side doo-plex penthouse we just about peed our pants.

It should come as no surprise that the ballsy and brassy Miz Rivers–who is, let's be honest, thisclose to becoming a clownish caricature of herself in the same plastic surgery vein as Cher and Michael "The White Lady" Jackson–listed her 5,190 square foot penthouse on swank East 62nd Street with a ballsy, brassy and blistering $25,000,000.

Property records are a bit wacky on this one, but as best as we can tell from the people at Property Shark is that Miz Rivers purchased the 3 bedroom and 4.5 penthouse condominium in 1988 for an unknown amount of money but an amount that we would bet our long bodied bitches Linda and Beverly was a fraction of the current asking price.

Listing information reveals Miz Rivers' residence sits atop a 42-foot wide limestone mansion built in 1903 by noted architect Horace Trumbauer in "the neo-French Classic style" for a ladee named Alice Troth Drexel who had married into the famous Drexel banking family of Philadelphia. Sometime later the once grand house was chopped up into 12 condominiums, at least some of which still feature original details.

Miz River's aerie, according to listing information, includes a "dramatic" gallery and living room with 23-foot ceilings, parquet de Versailles flooring, original fireplace surrounds, and original boiserie which is really a nice gay decorator word for carved paneling. Miz Rivers has had a Fort Knox worth of gilding done in the main reception room and in the larger of the two, which looks like the sort of place in which Marie Antoinette might feel comfortable, the ceiling has been painted like a clouded sky. Your Mama wonders if a system of fiber optic lighting hoo-has turns that blue day sky into a dark night sky with twinkling stars just like the ceiling does at that horrid mall at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas.

The dining room has much lower ceilings than the reception rooms, but is no less ornate with it's 18th century mirrored panels and gilded details. We're sort of surprised to even see a dining room in Miz Rivers' residence because we thought the crass comedian had stopped eating about 100 years ago and instead just injects herself with a combination of nutrients, Restylane and formaldehyde.

The library, with its wonderfully wacky Cheetah print carpeting includes more paneling, another original marble fireplace mantel, built in book shelves with actual books–say what you will about Miz Rivers' but at least the beehwatcha reads–and a giant dark caramel colored tufted sofa where she probably sat and watched herself on the boob-toob while she won the most recent season of that deplorable Donald Trump's Apprentice.

The dining room opens to a tiled and planted terrace which is a lovely feature but does anyone really imagine that Miz Rivers actually sits out there? She's really not a creature made for being out of doors unless it's to dash from the back of a car to the front door of a building. She's not a vampire, of course, but certainly the sun would quickly shrivel and melt the ol' gurl in 2 minutes or less.

The New York Times reported that Miz Rivers wants to sell her penthouse of old-school Upper East Side opulence in order to move to California to be closer to her daughter Melissa, who lives in Los Angeles and is the surgified spitting image of her mother.

Other showbizzy residents of Miz Rivers' building include film producer Alan Ladd Jr. and Tessa Kennedy who is the mother of actor Cary Elwes and film agent Cassian Elwes.

Miz Rivers also owns a country house north of New York City in Litchfield County, Cee-Tee.

Joan also owns a weeknd home in CT. I wonder is she'll be putting that on the market as well?

Not my style at all, but if it were, I would probably be peeing myself of excitement. Those high ceiling really add a lot to the reception rooms, and you can't beat period details. This is gold-leaf-tacky done right, children!

So, she decides at this particular moment in time to list this place at what can only be called an ambitious asking price. Interesting. Can't say that I understand the reasoning. She doesn't seem to be on the Madoff list, but you never know. Many people were not direct investors but rather were in through one of the feeders. Hence, their names don't show up on the list.

Yes, Marie Antoinette would definitely have enjoyed her cake in that parlor. Maybe Ms. Joan Alexandra Molinsky should have changed her name to Madamme Joan Les Fleuves instead. There's still time!

Rivers and Madoff?

Here's an excerpt from her recent NY Times interview [http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/04/magazine/04wwln-Q4-t.html?_r=1&scp=2&sq=Joan%20Rivers&st=cse]:

Joan Rivers: I love my life, except for losing all that money with Ruth and Bernie. I’m pleading with you, please say, “She lost a bundle with Bernie Madoff.”

NY Times: Did you?

JR: No, but everybody is walking around now saying that, and that shows that you used to be very rich.

ZING!!

Gold leaf on ivory French Provincial interior design is my least favorite style. In fact, I don't care for it at all, but I have to say at least it's done in very good taste here, so should appeal to those who do like it. Whoa, I referenced Joan Rivers and good taste in the same sentence.. who knew :) I can't help thinking how much better the Saperstein residence could have looked, if only..

I think labeling Cher as a plastic surgery caricature of herself in the same vein as Michael Jackson is taking it a bit far, but will say that I've never felt the same about her appearance since she began having her lips injected to make them larger. If she'd just stop doing that, or at least cut back on the degree to which she augments them, she'd look a whole lot better, imo.

The NYT article mentions "condo" board. I thought only co-ops had an approval process. Can anybody clarify? Nice work as always, Mama. Hope y'all had a lovely weekend.

With the exception of the dining room, it's safe for Mz Joan to clap anywhere in that apartment.

I'll bet the decorator measured her arms before creating any of those tablescapes.

Anonymous said...

I am still trying to figure out how they come up with these prices in New York.
Oh well.
Joan Rivers is funny as hell though.

I cannot imagine sitting in that living room with Miz Rivers...

She may be a lovable ol' caricature of herself, but the apartment is authentic Trumbauer through-and-through...

If only she didn't look like someone took a belt sander to her face.

Well, dears, I just happened to have recently visited La Rivers's weekend swankienda in Connecticut, and it is much, much comfier than this place looks. (She and I aren't intime--I was in the company of an elderly queen who is the darling of down-the-road country nabes of hers, the snootiest and most RIDICULOUS queens on any coast, in any country, on any planet, btw, but I digress--so I've never been to the city place.) Anywho, she was charming and gracious to this hanger-on to hangers-on, even if you just don't know where to look when talking to her. Like the person Donna Douglas wanted to be on the Twilight Zone, or, yes, OMG Mama, Madame. She may very well have lost do-re-mi with that Madoff creep, but Phi Beta Kappa Joanie is no dummy---she'll just make it back selling her trinkets. She has energy TO BURN! Love that Joanie!

Incredible house. Agreed, LGB, Trumbauer!

Joan Rivers out of New York. For reals!?

Anonymous said...

oh you can say that again. those old litchfield county (that would be where joan's place is) queens are just the worst. mostly all drunks. all without a sense of irony.
would love to have a little taste of what the river's digs are like up there. don't think it's ever been published, but i may be wrong.

Anonymous said...

you do have to admire her loyalty (at least publicly) to melissa, who does not seem to have one redeeming quality that i can identify. the only thing more notable on the apprentice than her atrocious behavior at the end, was her utter lack of charm and intelligence throughout. she had a brief marriage (with huge wedding thrown by joan at the plaza). the guy was very waspy and really pretty cute, if you can believe it. from a wealthy family too, so he wasn't doing it for the money. in the horse business, and i have the sneaking suspicion he may have been playing for the other team. although you would think joan could have figured that out.

Angeleyes- this is not French Provincial decor. Provincial decor is "country French"- more simple and no gilding.
This is French Palace decor, and done rather well. She also seems to have some important furniture- I have seen her shopping at the shop of a leading French furniture and porcelain dealer here in New York, and I would say that some of the pieces seem to be from there.

Well, 12:36, can we talk? So it is unclear whether Joanie's house is in ubertony New Preston, or in adjacent, and distinctly-middle-class-Veda New Milford--it is on or maybe straddles the border. Anyway--come closer, dear, I sense some of those old queens' big ears nearby (you're right, what a group of old bats, especially the men)--you go up a long, gently curving driveway. The house seems to be of fairly recent vintage, or maybe there is one of those highly overrated antique Connecticut colonials buried in remodelings, don't know-- there's an entrance hall that seems to lead off in many directions, up stairs, kitchen somewhere off to the right, long hall to the left maybe--the place just RAMBLES, my dear. The only room I saw (picture the waxworks within) was a big living room with multiple cushy sofas, and tables full of--I swear, or maybe I imagined it--the inevitible chic chatkes, silver-framed photos of the grandchild (charming--oh to have a grammie like Joan!)) and of two old prewar coots--to her credit, J made a joke about who they were, not actually ancestors--I'm telling you, she really is REAL, in spite of everything--the local queens take themselves VERY seriously, you're right, but Joan knows IRONY, I'm tellin' ya-- Anyway, the room had fabulously high ceilings-- the food offerings were the best, the best! NOTHING is too good for our Joanie or for Joanie's guests. As I say, she is generous and alot of fun, but you just know that she's NOBODY'S FOOL--and you like her all the more for it. Anyway, that's really all I can remember, 12:36, because I thought the whole thing would be best appreciated at least a little tight, or alot. Oh, there was some name for the house on the mailbox, I think. One of those adorable country-house names.... Cloudwalk or some such? Maybe that was Miss Diller and wife's house which was somewhere near there... grander than grand in the Litchfield hills, yes indeedy....

Anon 12:23 & 1:16 - THANK YOU for a glimpse inside Miz Rivers private life!

Rivers found the apartment in disrepair. "It was horrible," she says. The apartment's main space once served as a ballroom, with a minstrel's gallery - now her bedroom, and the men's cloakroom, now her den. "But," Rivers continued, "the space was like nothing I had seen. The high ceilings and windows were amazing and I adored the light."
Rivers commissioned Louis Malkin, who had designed her California home, and architect Henry Stolzman to restore the original beauty. Rivers hosts grand parties in this palatial space, welcoming as many as fifty guests with piano music or a string quartet. For more intimate dinners, she uses the separate dining room. Evoking a candlelit jewel box, the dining room's ornate panels - originally from an eighteenth century chateau - that once adorned the walls of the Astor Theatre ladie's room.
After purchasing the space, she observed peculiar phenomena, such as unexplained changes in the apartment's temperature. Parapsychologists from new York university were called in to assess the situation. Finally, she summoned a 'ghost-buster' from New Orleans, who rid the townhouse of the ghosts of the former tennants.
Museum quality russian furniture, A huge collection of Faberge objects and very high quality art adorn the place. Joan has fine taste indeed.....if I only had $25M ....

Anonymous said...

That's by far my least favorite style, but even I will have to admit it's done extremely well. I lived in New York from late 1994 to early 1998 and I know Joan Rivers was already living there then, so not sure the purchase date of 1998 is correct--I'm fairly sure it had to be sooner, not that it matters. I can NOT imagine it selling for anywhere near the asking price, but it will be interesting to see! As always, thanks Mama.

For any of the chillin' who get the slightest tingle from the proportions and decoration of these rooms.......you will truly enjoy "American Splendor" by Michael Kathrens. It is a magnificent text and photos of the Trumbauer residential commissions. Trumbauer was a terrific architect and took full advantage of his wealthy, (stinking rich), clients to create some real treasure homes. Sadly, many of them are long gone and their grounds replaced by housing developments. Housing developments are fine.........but the Trumbauer mansions were unique.

Oh, anonymous 12:23 and :36 I think we have to have a sitdown chat.I'm sure we'd know some of the same people. Joanie's house is indeed a Washington/New Preston address. Fursternberg's "Cloudwalk" is New Milford, though Merryall. I was a realtor for a while there, but moved on to save my hide and my sanity. I still have MLS access, so I could pull up the pics from when Joan bought the house. I never toured it when it was on the market last.

Well, my dear 4:27, as you know the NW CT woods is full of superannuated queens-- up the road from Miss Diller is a certain ancient and notorious writer/sadist--surely you know him-- there's also Mr. Kramer, near Joanie, bless his heart (seriously--we owe him alot--the only worthwhile one in the whole county, really), there's a Mississippi miss who dressed up a bunch of old dames like Claudette in furs and took their pictures (and who no doubt has his own stone martens and jumbo pumps to match). Old desecrators--given to prissy European interiors-- with horrible breath. Texas-born garden ladies. Then there are the younger ("younger" in CT means 30s-40s-50s, even 60s), social-climbing queens--ghastly. Then there is ancient Hollywood and ancient children of Hollywood-- there's Miss Polly Bergen... there's Marlene's old fluffer... and a particularly ornery old dipsomaniac one-book writer who has been known to fall faceward into her soup at restaurants. Oh, she's a real c.u. next Tuesday. Mean and tedious! They're all smart, brainy smart and chic smart-- but they all seem so unhappy. (Well, Polly doesn't seem so unhappy--like Joan, I hear, a good ole' gal.) And BITCHY... what a den of ridiculous vipers. At least people seem happier in the Hamptoons... I mean, these are people (the ones in CT) who get all excited by the appearance of Karen Valentine at a benefit! And Gene Rayburn! Except I think he died, didn't he? Or else they get all atwitter over a sighting of Anne Bass. Zzzzzzz. Too too boring. The only interesting people of any persuasion in CT are the ones you don't see, who might occasionally ask you up for a night-- they're at home in their gardens or with one or two friends, and they don't bring city bullshit up with them. Now, 4:27, if I didn't have to go work the phones to try to wangle an invite for this coming weekend (hell, yes, I'll take LC!), I'd tell you to go get me a drink right now and come over here and tell me, who do you know? Even if I had time, maybe we better not do this here, though. Mama might not like it. (I can just see Mama in Litchfield County--she'd make short work of that bunch! She'd sick the long-bodied bitches on the lot of them!)

wow 1:16. i asked and you delivered big time. that deserves a big hug. post down below mentions that it was published in ad. ugh. that magazine just really sucks, having been reminded of how much it sucks by leafing through the new american country house june issue in borders yesterday (refuse to buy it). when will someone have the balls to come out and declare what a hack paige rense is. this woman would have been fired a long time ago but she delivers the advertisers from atlanta and dallas so. . .

joan seems so un-litchfield, but blaine is there (over the line in millbrook actually), and apparently that's what got her up there. joan's very conservative when it comes to politics, so i suppose it's more supper at the de la rentas with nancy and henry than cloudwalk fancies.

Anonymous said...

557, I cannot see Joan Rivers and Mrs. K in the same room. Not to mention Mrs. de la Renta!

Anonymous said...

joan is actually quite conservative. yes, i know it may come as quite a shock and disappointment to many of the boys here but that's the way it is. not about social issues but otherwise absolutely. much like the kissingers, if not exactly the de la rentas. annette comes from a democratic family. her step-father was charles englehard, who was close to jack kennedy, etc. oscar has always been identified with republican first ladies, though i think he did a few things for hillary as well. joan was a republican when she had a talk radio show in new york. i don't know what she calls herself now.

Yak said...

The patio is nice but the rest of it is Donald Trump meets hoity-toity pretentiousness meets faux Vegas. I just threw up in my mouth despite the gold leaf being sooooo classy.

Anonymous said...

Oscar also did a few things in subway men's rooms... allegedly!

Anonymous said...

yeah, there would seem to be a parallel between oscar and barry. but oscar, unlike barry, is every post-menopausal (very rich) woman's dream. a true gentlemen, elegantly dressed and smelling just fine. always admiring of a beautiful, well dressed woman (who also might be in the market for some very expensive clothes). i think he is one of those guys who, yes would prefer to have sex with men, but would prefer to develop the rest of this life with a woman (which he's done twice now). and both women seem to be, or have been, quite happy with the situation.

N said...

Ms. Rivers' home is also extensively pictured and described in James Gregory's coffee table book, New York Apartments, Private Views. The pictures are very large and razor sharp.

If you're interested in NY apartments, you'll enjoy this book!

Anonymous said...

Post-menopausal rich women dream of queens? Good grief. Yes, men are pains, but can't these women pick out their own dresses? I will agree that it's about selling crap, making money-- but there's not a little self-loathing and hypocrisy there too. Hate it!

Anonymous said...

i think oscar and annette, from what i've read, have a very vital and interesting relationship. who knows? both feisty, both smart, both powerful. neither particularly needs the other. both bring different things to the table. self-loathing and hypocrisy? no idea. it's not about selling crap when it comes to their relationship, it's about developing a life that works reasonably well and makes them reasonably happy.

Anonymous said...

They may have a vital time picking out dresses together, but let's face it, that's where the vitality stops! Seriously--I have nothing against their relationship, other than their having p.r. agents to sell the public (and prospective customers) a love story. I don't know who's more cynical, them or me.

Anonymous said...

no darling, most of these women can not pick out there own dresses, a fact that has kept, and will continue to keep, a good many gay men up in quite grand litchfield country houses.

Anonymous said...

Maybe you're right. But when you run across old-style queens with antediluvian aspirations to live like they think Babe Paley lived--and they're in their 20s--the mind reels.

Anonymous said...

get over it. most hetero couples are having sex once every two years at their age. they're having it one time less, at least with each other. annette is a super sophisticated, essentially european woman, and she just lives her live on a different (not necessarily higher) plane than americans who claim they are having these wonderful 'authentic' relationships.

angeleyes said...

1:16, thx for the correction. I lump all French furniture and design of this or a similiar type under a 'Provincial' umbrella, signifying everything I don't care for about French interior design. I knew someone would probably correct me for it too, lol

THAT WAS THE ONLY REASON SHE WAS THERE PUTTING UP WITH ALL THAT BULLSHIT, BUT THEN SHE TELLS CINDY ADAMS THE TRUTH, WHICH IS THAT IT WAS ALL ABOUT THE EXPOSURE SHE COULD GET FROM X NUMBER OF WEEKS IN PRIMETIME. . .

My oh my, 5:50. Yes you've said a lot that's made me laugh, all true of course. To plug Joan for a moment. I know the television cameras add 10 lbs, but in all reality, they must highlight the deficiencies of plastic surgery. Joan looks, while not completely natural in person, to be not completely plastic in real life.
I love Larry, and his view of the lake. Oh, and Polly and the galpal are in Southbury, just over the line. The things they've done to that house to make it suitable for an aging star that no longer wants to climb stairs. It's great inside, but a 1700's cape should NOT have a shed roofed addition like that. The next owners are gonna have a mess on their hands.

Then, of course, one wonders what her new place in California will be like...her old house, in Bel Air, was fabulous and tasteful. I'm thinking it'll be Beverly Hills or maybe Malibu since that's where Melissa lives.

I think this article is most unkind to Ms. Rivers and without merit. She's now 78 yrs. old and why should you care what her penthouse looks like? She's the only one living there, so why criticize it or her? She has the right to ask whatever she wishes for her apt as she worked all her life and has paid for it herself. I do not blame her for wanting to be near her only child and grandson as this is the only family she has. Leave her alone and get a life. i think her apt. is exquisitely beautiful and personally speaking, I think she looks terrific! Stop being so darn mean spirited. It is NOT becoming.

As a real estate agent, it's very interesting how River's converted a ballroom into a fairly spectacular home with unbelievable views.

However, like Jane Fonda who is selling her Atlanta condo, River's is very unrealistic in her asking price and is charging for the fact that she currently ownes it, which simply doesn't work in a repressed market.

Her home, like Fonda's, has some incredible beautiful elements, but some majors drawbacks that negatively effect the value,(namely, a kitchen that is horribly small and dated, and frankly needs to be far more upscale for a home in that price point),.

Also,as various people here have pointed out, the house is a little too customized to River's taste and simply overdone from a decor standpoint.

It's very hard working with seller's in this market, but if she were wise, she would price it appropriately, which would be about half of it's current list price and add ten percent negotiation room and get on with it.

The fact that it's priced so high indicates that she's not really serious about selling it.

I wonder what designed to sell would recommend for this place to get it sold ! It is really designed for a particular taste.......Like she said maybe a rich Arab.....but I could live there and make it work!On her show when she said that family matters the most and her daughter is what's most important....it made me cry... she gets it! good luck Joan and god bless.
