Your Mama Hears...

...From a little birdie that notoriously brusque and brash comedienne Wanda Sykes (The New Adventures of Old Christine, Back at the Barnyard, Curb Your Enthusiam)bought a modest house in Media, Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania? Media? Whaaat?

Ain't nuthin' wrong with the P.A. children, but suburban Philly just isn't where Your Mama imagined the newly out and about lezbeeun ladee would be picking up property. However, a little look-see into property records and, sho enuf, it appears that Miz Sykes and another ladee–perhaps her special ladee?–recently forked over $500,000 to buy a house in small town Media, PA which bills itself as "Everyone's Hometown." For what it's worth, Paul (Dimeo) the Carpenter from that emotionally maudlin and impossible to watch without vomiting Extreme Makeover: Home Edition program is also from Media, PA.

Prop records show that the sassy and snarkalicious sister also owns a 2,268 square foot house on Dixie Canyon Avenue in the Sherman Oaks section of Los Angeles which she scooped up in April of 2004 for $1,295,000.

Media is a charming small town with well preserved residential and commercial architecture and interesting restaurants. There is a great arts community as well. Wanda has good taste. Not all great places to buy a home have gazillions of people.

she's poor, she could only afford a $500,000 house. and 1.295 for a house is los angeles is like buying a run down trailer... she needs to buy more money.

Anon 11:28 is either idiot joe or related.

She bought the house in Sherman Oaks back in 2004. And it is Sherman Oaks (aka "the valley") not LA. It would be neither run down or a trailer at that price in that area.

"she needs to buy more money"

People EARN money, not buy it. Of course, if you are idiot joe, you probably haven't worked an honest day in your life so you may not know the difference.

Your Mama apparently knows little about what's really going on in Philadelphia...we actually have quite a vibrant and large gay & lesbian community here, but in the city and the trendier burbs...after all, Philadelphia does huge travel business with the LGBT community with its "Get your history straight and your nightlife gay..." tourism ad campaign. Throw in our affordability, midway location 'tween NYC and DC and the incredibly high concentration of colleges & universities in the metro area (I believe the highest such concentration of anywhere in the country...), and it's not as shocking as it may seem at first...;-)

Woo! Wanda and I are neighbors!

Maybe Wanda's just as down to earth as I hoped. You can buy a 'nice house' anywhere, but finding a neighborhood and community that fits and you enjoy is more important - and usually more difficult. Quality of life isn't just about architecture.

Wanda's hilarious - I bet it would be a gas to live next door to her.

BTW - Bigdaddyj - the 'history straight & nightlife gay' line is great. Is that a real tag line or did you make that up?

I love me some Wanda. Especially her series where she did people's jobs. My favorite was when she learned how to repossess her truck from the loser friend who "bought" it from her with a bad check.

Maybe they have family in that area. Even if they don't, Media is a lovely little town, and Philadelphia has long been a very gay-friendly city. Ms. Sykes and her wife sound pretty smart to me.

I doubt $1.2 M buys a trailer in LA. It could buy you a house in the hills now, and that price was FOUR years ago.

They must have family in the area.

I LOVE Wanda, that job show was great!!!!

They don't call Philly the "City of Brotherly Love" fo nuttin'...

StPaul is right. I moved from my parent's home in NYC to take a job in suburban Philadelphia....Media to be exact. It is a wonderful, affordable, clean, and historic town. It has a great main street (State Street), loads of countryside and parks and beautiful, well-built homes from the 1700's to be had with property larger than a postage stamp. It is very out of Hollywood character and how did she find out about that?

Just an FYI to everyone, Shes lived here for a few years now at least

Yeah, she has been here for awhile. We see her from time to time out walking. She speaks, and we continue just like she's not a celebrity. I like for her to have her privacy. She lives a few blocks away from us. :)

I didn't bother to read all the comments so this may be a repeat but, Wanda built that Media house; she didn't buy it already built. It's nice, unpretentious, and fits in the neighborhood. Her next door neighbor is a psychologist, and their little section of Media has newer houses. I live in a row home about two blocks from her so you can tell she didn't go to one of the ritzy neighborhoods to live. My ex bro-in-law used to see her having a drink in the local bars and like someone else said, she's just a regular lady in Media. No big hoopla. I've lived here all my life and it's nice to know that a star likes our little town.
